Original Price: $2,750.00

A hand-carved tall case or grandfather clock dates from the early 1900's. The solid chestnut case is in beautiful condition, made in Brittany or Bretagne, a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs. The original finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. At the base is a scene of village life, with a maiden offering a drink. Grapes and vines, oak leaves and acorns are artistically carved into the case. The 8 day movement is later, a good runner that strikes the hour. The dial shows its age, and this antique measures 24 1/2" wide, 12" deep and 7'3" tall. C-C1159
