Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs. The finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Drawers are hand dovetailed, the fluted columns are tapered. See photos of minor shrinkage cracks from age, also a chip to the right rear crown. This dowry cupboard has spectacular carved scenes of village life with a kissing couple, and three dimensional statues of a courting couple support the upper cabinet. Expertly carved in solid chestnut, there is a mohogany center panel in the serving area. Behind is a gallery, reflected in a mirror. Truly outstanding artistry from the 1890's this cupboard was crafted by a very talented country cabinetmaker. Perspective in the scenic panels is impressive, note the traditional costume and wooden shoes. The finish is original from about 1890. This antique disassembles for easier moving, dimensions are 5' wide, 2' deep and 8'3" tall. I-C1331
