Spare and simple Yankee design is evident in this hand-made oak country schoolmaster's slant top desk and stand. The deep brown finish is excellent, and the solid quarter sawn oak with hand-cut dovetailed joinery is beautiful.
The desk lifts off its sturdy base and can be used tabletop as well. Under the lid is storage, small cubicles and a drawer. Dating from about 1890, the lock operates with an iron key. Finished all around for use at the head of a classroom, this well-worn antique furniture has great character and patina - mars, stains and shrinkage separations.
Size is 26" wide, 24" deep, 37" tall, and the top slopes up from 32" high at the front.
