A classic Georgian tall case or grandfather clock was signed by the maker "George Gowan, London" about 1790. The hand-engraved and enameled dial is beautiful, there is a "silent or strike" lever to silence the hourly bell at night if desired.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, the hand-made 8 day brass movement is in fine running condition. The clean lines reflect late Georgian or Hepplewhite design, and the solid mahogany case has an excellent finish.
Glass in the door is old and wavy, and fluted columns to the right and left are well proportioned. We have not been able to research the maker, but there was a "G. Gowan" watch and clockmaker active in 1753, listed in the Webster Signature Database.
Measurements of this historic antique clock are 20" wide, 10" deep and 7'8" tall. M-C1429 |
