The traditional dowry cupboard in Holland is a "Kas" or armoire like this superior example. Designed to display the affluence and prominence of a bride's family, this imposing antique was entirely hand crafted of native oak and ash, plus rare and valuable exotic woods from Dutch colonies including ebony, rosewood and mahogany.
Filled with dowry linens, silver, pewter and china, this Kas descended with a daughter, and was the largest and most important piece in an affluent home. This gleaming armoire dates from the late 1800's, although the distinctive Netherlands design is centuries old.
Exposed hand cut dovetails on the case and drawers show outstanding workmanship. The original finish has been polished and is in excellent condition with antique character including mars at the edges and shrinkage separations from age. The interior is empty, it could be fitted with shelves or a closet pole as desired.
An ebony cover opens, revealing the keyhole for an iron lock that still works. Measurements of this dramatic antique are 67" wide, 26" deep and 6' 6" tall.
