The traditional dowry cupboard in Holland is a "Kas" or armoire like this picturesque example. Designed to display the affluence and prominence of a bride's family, this imposing antique was entirely hand crafted of native oak, plus rare and valuable exotic woods from Dutch colonies including ebony and mahogany. Classic deep moldings are distinguished, backsides of the panels are chamfered.
Filled with dowry linens, silver, pewter and china, this Kas descended with a daughter, and was the largest and most important piece in an affluent home. This boldly designed armoire dates from around 1850, although the distinctive Netherlands design is centuries old.
Exposed wooden pegs show outstanding workmanship. The original finish has been polished and is in excellent condition with antique character including mars at the edges and shrinkage separations from age. The interior has two shelves plus a drawer for silver and other valuables.
A keyhole cover slides open, revealing the keyhole for an iron lock that still works, a brass key has been fitted to the latch. For easier moving, the large crown lifts off. There is an iron plate reinforcement on the back side, see photos.
Measurements of this dramatic antique are 63" wide, 26" deep and 74" tall.
