An authentic late Empire or "Biedermeier" secretary desk from the 1840's has an oak exterior. The drop front opens to reveal a tiger grain birch interior with ebonized accents.
This furniture from northern Europe is in remarkably fine condition. Clean and straightforward lines are enhanced with a superb satiny finish.
Large drawers are all hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms. An iron key works the lock of the drop front, which is a single wide oak plank. Drawer pulls were added about 1890, originally they were opened only with a key.
Measurements are 47" wide, 19" deep and 49" tall, the writing surface is 34 1/2" tall, or stool height.
