Magnificent Gothic design furniture from about 1860, this "Court Cupboard" is a hand carved cabinet, and was commissioned for the bride's wedding dowry. The two family coats of arms in the center panel represent noble families joined by marriage.
Masterfully created of solid oak and chestnut in northern France, the exquisite high relief detailing shows finesse and outstanding artistry. Spiral or rope twist columns are beautiful with authentic capitals, fine Gothic tracery in the doors is wondrous. Sides have raised panels, there are some shrinkage separations due to age.
Joints are secured with hand carved square wooden pegs. The original finish is exceptionally well preserved with warm antique patina, it has been waxed and polished, the top surface has been revarnished. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints, wrought iron hardware and working locks are also original. Behind the serving or display area is a display gallery. The crown at the top is removable, see photos.
This historic European cabinet can be disassembled for easier moving. On the backside are two fascinating labels, one indicating the maker, "F. Gerbaut" and an indecipherable seal plus the calligraphy inscription to "Monsieur Leherissey, Docteur Medicine," and an indecipherable city. Another partial label records a move in 1912, see photos.
Measurements are 58" wide, 24" deep, 97" tall, with the crest removed, height is 85" and the base cabinet is 38" tall.
