An authentic Country French sideboard or pewter cupboard from about 1910 has a clock, signed by the maker in Perpignan in the south of France. Carved of solid fine grained oak, the workmanship is outstanding. Drawers have hand cut dovetails, panels are raised, the crown is gracefully arched and there are grooves in the galleries for display.
The original finish has been waxed and polished, it is very well preserved with warm antique patina. Just a wipe with a dry cloth will maintain its warm glow. The top of the base has been revarnished for stain resistance and durability. Brasses are original. Keys are handles only, the locks do not work except for the two clock doors, both with beveled glass.
The "Morbier" clock has been professionally cleaned and oiled, it keeps excellent time. The 6 day movement is a double striker, the bell counts the hour twice in case one is not paying attention the first time. It also rings the half hour. The hand painted porcelain dial is signed by the maker, "Gaspard Scheicher a (of) Perpignan," an ancient and lovely town in southern France near the Spanish frontier.
The embossed brass surround depicts musicians and a dancing couple with wheat in the background.
For transporting, the upper section is a separate piece. Dimensions of this marvelous heirloom furniture are 91" wide, 25" deep, 8' 5" tall and the base is 37" high.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
