The movement, weights and pendulum of this tall case or grandfather clock dates from about 1860, the hand carved Country French oak case was built about 1930. An antique "Morbier" design one week movement keeps excellent time, striking the hour twice (in case you are not listening the first time) and the half hour.
The hand painted porcelain dial is signed by the maker, "Gauthier of Brinon," a historic town south of Paris near Lyon, in the Chateau country of the Loire River Valley.
Angels or cherubs and a sunburst with a lion head adorn the embossed brass surround. The iron pendulum arm has an interesting scissor folding design. Some of these clocks never had a case, or the original case may have been lost or damaged. The custom made solid oak case was hand carved with exquisite detailing, wooden pegged joints and raised panels, and is signed "RL."
For easier moving, the "hood" or top section is separate. Measurements of this charming furniture case are 20" wide, 14" deep and 92 1/2" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
