Hand made about 1870 of rosewood and mahogany, this folding lap or travel desk was the laptop of its day.
When the box is opened, the angled writing surface was useful, later fitted with a gold tooled leather top. Underneath is storage for papers, there are compartments where pens and inkwells could be placed.
On the top of this American made antique is a brass medallion that could be monogrammed.
The finish is very good with a few old India ink stains. There is no key for this picturesque box.
Size when closed is 20" long, 10" wide and 6" tall, when opened, the desk is about 20" square.
