The traditional dowry cupboard in Holland is a "Kas" or armoire like this picturesque example. Designed to display the affluence and prominence of a bride's family, this imposing antique was entirely hand carved of native European oak, plus rare and valuable exotic wood from Dutch colonies, genuine ebony.
Classic deep moldings and a monumental crown are distinguished, spiral columns are a true right and left pair.
Filled with dowry linens, silver, pewter and china, this Kas descended with a daughter, and would have been the largest and most important piece in an affluent home. This boldly designed armoire dates from around 1900, although the distinctive Netherlands design is centuries old.
The original finish is in excellent condition with antique character including mars and some losses at the edges, see photos. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. Inside are adjustable shelves plus drawers for silver and other valuables. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints. Hardware is original and the door lock works.
For easier moving, the large crown is removable.
Measurements of this dramatic antique are 5' 7" wide, 30" deep and 81 1/2" tall.
