Named after its inventor, Col. Davenport, this "ship captain" design desk was popular on board because of its functional design and small footprint.
The slanted writing surface opens out, resting on pull out supports, presumably to study large charts or maps of the ocean.
Solid walnut with hand carved pulls, the old finish is very well preserved with warm patina. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm luster.
A natural saddle leather panel is inlaid into the top. Inside are tiny cubicles and drawers for papers. Drawers have hand cut dovetails on this American made furniture.
Size is 33" wide, 23" deep and the top slopes up from 28" high at the front to 31 1/2" at the back.
