Hand crafted of solid cherry with cherry banding about 1900, this remarkable English secretary desk and bookcase was called a "butler's" desk. As head of the household staff, a butler paid bills and kept records here.
The original finish is in very fine condition with just enough mars and wear for antique character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the warm patina.
The splendor of this furniture suggests a very nice "pile," as the Brits call extremely large houses.
Banding and the ledge below the bookcase are comprised of a mosaic of cherry end grain pieces, with some golden "sapwood" that occurs just under the bark of a tree.
The desk is hidden in the top false "drawer" which pulls out, then push buttons drop the front to open. Inside are tiny drawers and cubicles for papers plus the requisite secret compartments, released from inside the locking small door. Large lower drawers have beautiful tiny hand cut dovetail joints, brass locks are signed "Made in England." Upper shelves adjust on wooden supports.
The upper bookcase is a separate piece for easier moving on this exquisite furniture.
Measurements are 50" wide, 23" deep, 8' 2" tall, the writing surface is 31" high when opened and the base is 42" high.
