English Moorhouse of Wetherby 1830 Tall Case Grandfather Clock, Quartz Movement
This tall case grandfather clock from about 1830 is signed "D. L. Moorhouse, Wetherby," a market town in northern England, and has a new quartz battery movement that is very accurate.
Hand painting on the iron dial includes a hunting scene, the center area with numerals and signature was repainted later. A calendar dial no longer works, hands are replacements.
The long case is mahogany with oak and rosewood banding, there are shrinkage separations from age and losses at the edges, see photos. The old finish is very well preserved, waxed and polished to a lovely sheen, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina.
Wavy glass in the door is charming, the lock on the lower door is a replacement. Wetherby is a riverbank town in Yorkshire near Leeds, chartered in 1240 that was a staging post between London and Edinburgh. This clock has an authentic antique case combined with the convenience of a battery movement.
Measurements of this historic furniture are 24 1/2" wide, 10" deep and 90 1/2" tall.
