A very large twelve panel Chinese screen from around 1920 is traditional "Coromandel" artistry. Layers of colored lacquer are hand painted on a wooden background, finished in black lacquer, then expertly hand carved down to "reveal" intricate multi-colored birds and garden scenes motifs with spring blossoms.
Richly detailed, this work of art has understated colors. The back ground and the back side are a black finish, recalling the texture of leather - seep photos. There are various touchups and repairs over the years to this lovely Asian antique.
Panels measure 8' tall and 18" wide, hand crafted hinges connect at about 45 degrees, so when folded accordion style, width is about 13' as shown. If the lift off hinges are disconnected and panels mounted flat on a wall, width is just over 18' overall.
