This spectacular hand carved court cupboard descended in the family of a jester to the Royal Court of Denmark, and has traditional sculptures of jesters.
Only the jester could be totally honest with the king without repercussions, so the "official comedian" post was a great honor and an important post.
The artistry in this solid walnut cabinet from around 1890 shows remarkable detail. Carving in high relief includes a dragon on the center door, fruit, swags and a lion head.
The original finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, waxed and buffed so that an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is all that is needed to maintain the warm luster. Hardware is original, hand dovetailed drawers have heavy pulls with faces, door locks are double throw or turned twice.
In the center is a display gallery at the back. This European heirloom furniture disassembles for easier moving.
Size is 63 1/2" wide, 23" deep, 7' 10" tall and the top surface is 39" high.
