Hand crafted about 1800 of solid figured mahogany during the Federal period, this splendid secretary desk has an excellent finish and warm patina.
American made furniture, the drop front has a hand carved shell motif, and rests on pull out supports. The key is a handle only, the lock does not work.
Inside are tiny drawers and cubicles for papers plus a locking compartment with a hand carved leaf design. Lower drawers are graduated and have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms.
Hand wrought brasses are over 100 years old but not original. Top corners have beautiful hand cut dovetail joints, see photos. Feet have been rebuilt on this East Coast antique. There are small losses at the edges and shrinkage separations from age as shown.
Measurements are 42" wide, 21" deep, 40 1/2" tall and the desk top is 30" high.
