A remarkable roll top desk from the 1880's has a second upper level pull out work area to use standing or with a stool. Hand crafted in Austria in the Biedermeier or Empire design, this extraordinary antique furniture is matched flame grain mahogany with an excellent finish. There are minor mars at the edges and shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
The roll top glides smoothly, inside are small drawers and a pull out gold tooled leather writing surface. Levers underneath unlatch secret compartments behind. Just above, a wide drawer has a pushbutton inside to drop the front, revealing the second upper writing area. Again there are small drawers and cubicles inside.
Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms on this historic European library desk. Various keys operate most of the locks. False drawer fronts on the bottom right are actually a locking door, a lever inside releases a trapdoor on the right side.
The kneehole is 23" high, behind is another locking compartment. Measurements are 50" wide, 30" deep, 56" tall, the main desktop is 30 1/2" high, the upper desk is 45" above the floor.
