Signed by renowned American artist, "George Washington Nicholson," this original oil painting on canvas depicts fishing boats at dawn.
Born near Salem, Mass., the artist studied painting in Philadelphia and Paris. He lived 1832-1912, and traveled extensively in Europe. Descended from English Quakers who arrived in 1675, his style was called Romantic Realism. Little is known of his life, he was a very private person, which did not enhance his fame. A friend of painter John Singer Sargent, he also painted a portrait of the poet Walt Whitman. A prolific painter, he did mainly landscapes, many set around the Mediterranean and across northern Europe. His works are in many museums across America and also in private collections.
This work of art is in very fine condition, there is an old repair that is visible on the back side, see photos. There are dimples in the canvas in the curved corners. The original frame has minor wear as shown.
Measurements are 54" wide, 34" tall and 2" deep.
