A classic Georgian period long case or grandfather clock was hand crafted around 1790 in England.
Solid cherry, there is exquisite inlaid banding and marquetry inlay of ebony and satinwood. The gleaming finish is in extremely fine condition with warm antique patina. A door key is a handle only, the lock does not work. Professionally cleaned and oiled, the original brass movement runs a week on a winding and keeps accurate time. A bell strike counts the hours, the winding crank is a replacement.
The iron dial hand painting appears original and has had small touchups over the centuries, see photos. A seated young woman outdoors is deep in thought, pausing with her book, the anchor motif suggests she is thinking of an absent sailor. There is a story here, unknown today. Hour and minute hands appear original, the second hand is a replacement. Unfortunately, this hand crafted clock is unsigned. Dimensions are 20" wide, 10" deep and 7' 11" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever.
A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
