A pair of 1900 era statues depicts two fishermen with halves of their boat, struggling against roiling ocean waves. One has a net, the other a pole. These sculptures are both signed on the boat, "Rousseau."
The artist, Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was Belgian, a prolific master of the human form who exhibited his work across Europe and in America. He was a professor of sculpture at the Royal Academy in Brussels.
These vigorous antique works of art are almost alive, and are mounted on wooden bases. Cast in spelter, a white metal alloy similar to pewter, there have been minor touchups to the original patinated finish and a repair to one foot.
Size is 27" tall and about 16" across.
