This bust of the legendary Persian Queen Scheherazade is embossed "Mille et une Nuits," or "1001 Nights," also called Arabian Nights, and is signed "Villaud."
Composition or "chalk," the hand painted original finish is in deep bronze tones. Made in France around 1900, this work of art shows Art Nouveau influence.
The story is that the king of Persia chose a virgin every night and had them killed in the morning, but Scheherazade told him such a charming story that he let her live to finish the next night, up to "a thousand and one nights," and then he chose her to be his queen.
Music, books, plays and operas have been based on this historic tale.
Size is 10" across, 6" deep and 16" tall.
