About 75 years old, this mammoth "coromandel" 12 panel screen from China depicts an imperial garden scene with bridges and pavilions, the back has vivid bird and flower motifs.
The classical technique is to paint many layers of colored lacquer, topped by black, then carefully carving into those colored layers to "reveal" the design. There are numerous restorations and touch ups to this traditional Asian furniture, see photos. Various warps, mars and scuffs plus some streaking to the black background add antique "character," height appears to have been reduced many years ago.
Panels are 19 1/2" wide, 1" deep and 7' 11" tall, so if flat on a wall, width is 20,' in accordion folded as shown, width is about 14.'
