A portrait of a gentleman is an original oil painting on canvas, signed "F. M. Pebbles, 1873." The gentleman is unknown, so this could be adopted as your wealthy ancestor. A relative of the artist contacted us with more information - his name was Francis "Frank" Marion Pebbles, 1839-1928. He was born in NY, lived in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and Chicago and died in California. Well known as a portrait artist, one of his most famous works is a painting of U. S. Grant now in the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento. Other portraits are in the Illinois State Capitol and Supreme Court and around the country.
This work of art is masterful and the subject has a kindly aspect. There is also an undecipherable inscription bottom left on this American work of art. An oval shadow is from a liner, now lost. On the backside is a small restoration, see photos.
The original hand carved walnut frame has incised black and gold liners. Overall dimensions are 30" wide, 36" tall and 3" deep.
