A grand Italian "Cassone" is a traditional dowry chest or wedding trunk in Renaissance design, descending with the daughters of an aristocratic family. This example from about 1700 is solid wormy walnut with a fine old finish and warm antique patina.
Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain its luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are shrinkage separations and mars for antique character.
Every surface is hand hewn and there is a deeply hand carved grapevine motif. Original wrought iron hardware includes "blued" engraved hinges and a giant open lock and key that still work. Feet are removable.
A bride's dowry including linens and silver would have been kept in this prized heirloom possession. The top lifts, there is a compartment for valuables inside this furniture from northern Italy, also functional as a wide screen TV console.
Measurements are 65" long, 22" deep and 27 1/2" tall.
