Hand carved of solid rosewood in China, a traditional chest or trunk is lined with aromatic camphor wood, which resists moths and insects as does cedar wood.
The original finish is very well preserved and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the warm luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. Inside is a removable dovetailed tray, brass mounts and padlock are original.
Heavy weight and superior carving show that this was a dowry chest for the daughter of an affluent family, holding her linens and silk embroidery.
Measurements are 41" long, 21" deep and 24" tall.
