This graceful arched mirror has rich architectural moldings and is made of solid walnut with matched burl decoration. It was entirely hand made with hand carved accents, and the back retains the original hand planed pine boards, top and bottom, behind the mirrors. The original plate glass mirror is in very good condition with very little smoke. The walnut frame has the original finish and is in remarkable condition for its age, only the top of the shelf has been re-varnished. There are some touch ups to the joints right and left of the arched top. It is sturdy and solid and the finish is a warm glowing medium brown color.
The top and base are separate pieces for easier handling, and there is a mirror in the base for women to check their petticoats. It was made in the 1870's and the base is 33 1/2" wide, 14" deep, and 32 1/2" tall. The upper mirror is 70 1/2" tall for a total height of 8 1/2 feet. These imposing Pier Mirrors magnified the light from gas chandeliers, and were often used between windows in a parlor, on a stairway landing, and especially in entry foyers. A-M284
