This 18th century fruitwood armoire is entirely hand made; everything is hand sawn and hand planed, the carving is subtle yet elegant. The doors have the original hand wrought iron hinges and lift off. The removable crown has been rebuilt. It is held together with mortised joints and hand cut wooden pegs. The finish is a rich warm brown color, and the panels on the front have contrasting grain in solid matched burl. Inside, there is one modern shelf; it could be fitted for a closet pole or shelves as desired.
There have been various restorations over the past 200 years as would be expected. Truly made with hand tools by a skilled country cabinetmaker, this armoire was constructed in southern France in the later 1700's. On the inside and back there are hand cut irregular planks of hardwood. This armoire is in fabulous condition for its age and has great warmth and patina. The replaced key operates the lock. It is sturdy and solid and measures 6' 5 1/2" tall, 23" deep, and is almost 5' wide. This is a fabulous price for a period armoire made in France about 1780. F-A431 This item has sold.
