Hand carved of solid chestnut, this traditional Breton dowry chest is from Brittany, a French province near the English Channel. A skilled country carpenter made this beautiful cabinet with raised panels and wheel shaped ventilated doors.
These cupboards were part of a young woman's dowry, and descended through the daughters in the family. Moved to her new home after they married, it contained her linens, pewter and personal treasures. There are galleries to display pewter or faience plates.
The heavy weight brasses appear original, and the upper section is removable for delivery. There are several shrinkage separations, see photos. The piece is sturdy and solid, and the excellent original finish is a warm deep brown that accentuates the natural chestnut wood. Dating from the early 1900's, measurements are 4'9" wide, 23" deep and 7'9" tall.
