Immigrant's from northern Europe brought their belongings to America in this hand made oak trunk or chest. They were persons of some means, as this is a beautiful antique treasure chest.
At the bottom is a hand dovetailed drawer, and inside is a small compartment for valuables. On the backside, hand dovetailed joinery is visible, the hand wrought handles and hinges appear original and the lock on the lid still operates with an iron key. On the underside of the lid is a hand carved "butterfly" to join two planks of oak, and the moldings around the top are secured by wooden pegs.
The medium brown finish is very fine, and this is a very ruggedly constructed trunk. Dating from the mid 1800's, - note old shrinkage separations in the sides and top. Size is 45" long, 25" deep and 29" tall. T-T5483
