These elegant walnut chairs were built as folding chairs to take outside for important occasions. The original finish is a warm deep brown with remarkably little wear, and they were made about 1890 in Italy. This style of chair was named after the famous Florentine monk and firebrand of the early Renaissance, Savonarola.
The overall design of these chairs dates back to the ancient Romans. They are sturdy and solid and the hand carving is elegant and very skillful. A we have seen in other Italian pairs, one has carved rings around the armrest, we do not know the meaning of these. There is very minor wear for their age and each chair measures 27 1/2" wide, 22" deep, and 39" tall. W-C4021 This item has sold.
