French Brittany Dowry Cabinet, Carved Folk Figures

— $3,975.00 —

The country woodcarvers of Brittany displayed their amazing heritage of folk expertise in this dowry cabinet with picturesque village scenes and traditional costumes. Hand-made of solid chestnut hardwood about 50 years ago, the finish is excellent.

There are curved spindle galleries to exhibit family treasures, and lots of storage inside. The upper section is separate for easier moving of this vintage masterpiece. Superior old-fashioned construction details include interior shelves with inlaid banding, raised panels on the backside, and dovetailed drawers.

Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.

This heirloom furniture traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry together with linens and tableware inside.

Size of this incomparable heirloom is 6' long, 21" deep 7'3" tall, and the lower section is 38" high. A-D1695
