Winterhalder-Hoffmeier Antique Tall Case Clock

— $6,950.00 —

The Black Forest German firm of Winterhalder & Hoffmeier was considered to be the finest Victorian clockmaker of their day. Fabulous workmanship defines their magnificent tall case or grandfather clock from about 1900.

The firm originated in the 1700's with clockmaker Nicholaus Winterhalder, joined by generations of family members and a partner, Anton Hoffmeier, about 1850.

Southwest Germany's "Schwarzwald" or Black Forest has been the center of German clockmaking for centuries, and the concern closed in 1937. Many of their outstanding clocks were exported to Britain.

The mahogany furniture case with shaped columns has its original finish in very fine condition with a few mars at the edges. Front and side doors have beveled glass.

Recently oiled, the 8 day movement works perfectly, with a Westminster 5 tube chime on the quarter hour and strike on the hour. The deep, majestic tone is wonderful.

An amazing dial is hand-engraved nickel and brass filigree on a mahogany back plate, with strike and chime shut off levers. There are mars on the three heavy weights and pendulum bob.

Dimensions of this stately antique clock are 28" wide, 19" deep and 7'8" tall.
