Mammy Bench, Rocking Deacon Bench / Cradle

This rocking deacon's bench with a fence to cradle a baby was traditionally called a "mammy bench," named after the nannies who used them. An adult could rock the bench while reading or probably sewing, with a baby or two safely held alongside.

Hand carved of pine and mixed hardwoods about 1840, this nostalgic country antique has its original hand-painted graining with wonderful rustic patina. Sturdy and usable furniture secured with wooden pegs, there is lots of character - mars, stains and wear.

On the bottom, this historic bench is painted in script, "T Levin, St. Joseph, Mich," probably a shipping instruction. The fence or guardrail is removable, and appears rebuilt.

Measurements of this charming example of Americana is 5'9" long, 25" deep, 30" tall and the seat is 14" high.
