Masterful and imposing grand furniture, this antique backbar or sideboard has statues, heads, linen fold paneling and a family coat of arms, all hand-carved in high relief by a skilled artist and sculptor.
Naturalistic poses characterize the caryatids, or human statues supporting the stately crown. A unicorn and grapevine form the heraldic crest on the lower center door. In the upper center is the head of a knight, wearing a helmet surmounted by a winged lion.
The finish is original except on the top surface, and the large scaled embossed brasses are also original from the 1870's. Deep moldings and bun feet are all well proportioned. The gleaming deep rich finish is excellent on solid oak with only a little wear, especially around the base - see photos.
The interiors have a golden finish, with adjustable shelves in the upper section. There are 11 lined silver drawers at the lower left. Doors swing on solid brass piano hinges. Drawers have beautiful hand-cut dovetails, and the upper section is a separate piece for moving.
Dimensions of this heroic furniture are 7 1/2' wide, 8'9" tall, 3' deep and the base cabinet is 56" tall.
