This style of game or chess table is called "handkerchief" because the top flips open to show the gameboard.
Hand carved of solid oak in Henry VIII style with spool turned legs and griffins in the top, the four folded "kerchief corners" flip up and the top spins. Inside is an inlaid chessboard of golden oak and mahogany squares.
The finish is superb on this robust furniture from the early 1900's. There are shrinkage separations in the playing area, and mars and wear to the base - see photos.
Size of this antique is 18 1/2" square when closed, 26" square when opened and height is about 29."
