The book-matched flame mahogany is dazzling on this Empire or Biedermeier drop front secretary desk, called an "Abattant" in French.
Inside the counter-weighted drop front, there is a secret drawer. It is opened by removing one of the tiny top drawers and pushing the secret drawer open with the fingertips. Drawers have hand cut dovetails and fit well.
A delicate crest is hand carved, and shows early Victorian influence. The lustrous finish is excellent with shimmering patina and beautiful color, front feet have mars. There are separation cracks in the small interior door panel and on both sides, also notice an old repair to the bottom rear left side. See Photos
All of the locks operate with keys. The second large drawer on the front has a key as a handle, it is locked with the second throw of the dropfront lock.
Crafted in Germany or Austria about 1840, the interior includes a slide out document tray with leather top.
Measurements of this historic antique furniture are 39" wide, 21" deep, 5' 8" tall and the writing area is 31 1/2" high when opened.
