This modern reproduction bronze statue of a horse with its head turned is a majestic sculpture, the bronze base is naturalistic, mounted on a marble plinth.
It is signed "P J Mene," who was the most famous of the Animalier school of sculptors in Paris in the later 1800's. Pierre Jules Mene, born in Paris in 1810, drew the animals at the Jardin des Plantes as a youth. He learned casting and metalworking from his father, and was largely self-taught. In 1837 he opened his own bronze foundry. Invited to exhibit at the Salon of Paris in 1838, he also won medals in 1855 and 1861 at the London Exhibition. The artist was presented with the prestigious Cross of Honor in 1861. He died in 1877, and this work of art is a modern replica of an original from the 1860's.
The rich chocolate patina is wonderful. Size of this inspiring sculpture is 15" long, 7" wide and over 12" tall.
