Traditional Brittany folk artistry is beautifully expressed in this solid chestnut cupboard. The separate upper section has open spindle grillwork. Golden brown patina is beautiful, the warm color is exceptional.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Fine incised carving is especially alluring.
This antique dates from about 1900, and has many uses. Measurements are 58" wide, 20" deep and 8'5" tall. The surface area is 39" from the floor.
