An oval curved salon table with genuine onyx top from about 1890 has the renowned "Vernis Martin" finish, hand painted scenes and original bronze mounts.
The famous "Vernis Martin" technique involves a frosty bronze gold background, developed in the 18th Century for the kings of France by the royal cabinetmaker, Martin.
This marvelous table has glowing antique patina. Expertly hand crafted in France, this historic furniture appears all original and unrestored. There are tiny shrinkage separations and slight flexion from age at some joint on this strong and very usable antique. The semi-precious onyx top is richly figured, it has been polished and sealed to resist stains.
Corner mounts have faces, and delicate moldings are all cast in rich bronze. Charming hand painted courting scenes recall the 18th Century manner. The "bombe" or convex ends are dramatic on this palatial table.
Measurements are 38" long, 28" wide and 30" tall.
