A classic Georgian design secretary desk was hand crafted about 1800, and we were told it was from New England. Tiny dovetail joints and mahogany banding suggest that the master cabinetmaker was apprenticed in England before emigrating to America.
The satiny finish is in excellent condition. Solid oak construction shows hand planing marks and square hand cut nail heads. Graduated drawers have chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetail joints. Brasses are old but not original on this traditional antique furniture. The lock and key still work on the drop front, which rests on pull out supports. Inside are dovetailed tiny drawers and cubicles for papers. There are restorations to the feet over the years on this understated and functional historic desk.
Size is 40" wide, 20" deep, 40 1/2" tall and the writing surface is 30" high.
