An Italian "Cassone" is a traditional dowry chest or trunk in Renaissance design, descending with the daughters of a prosperous family. This example from about 1775 is solid walnut with an excellent finish and warm antique patina. There are shrinkage separations and mars for antique character.
A bride's dowry including linens and silver would have been kept in this prized heirloom possession. The top originally lifted, this furniture from northern Italy has been altered to allow the the locking front panel to open instead, so things could be set on top, useful as a wide screen TV console.
Inlaid burl and banding are beautiful, hand carved detailing is exceptional. Original wrought iron hinges for the top are visible inside. There have been various alterations and restorations over the years.
Measurements are 71" wide, 23" deep and 26" tall.
