This style of Victorian desk was called a "Davenport" after its English inventor or a "ship captain's" desk because it made efficient use of space on board.
Solid walnut, this American made furniture was restored some years ago. The gleaming hand rubbed finish is in excellent condition, there is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos.
Side drawers have "racetrack" moldings and carved walnut motif pulls and were rebuilt. The writing surface is leather with gold tooling. Underneath are tiny cubicles for papers and a velvet lining.
Measurements of this jewel of a desk are 24" wide, 24" deep, 35" tall to the top of the gallery, and the desktop slopes up from 29" at the front.
