Hand carved of solid oak in Denmark about 1790, this splendid secretary desk has a bookcase top. The wonderful old finish has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the warm luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Joints have hand cut dovetails and carved wooden pegs, panels are hand chamfered. Hand engraved brass hardware is original. Outside wrought iron locks and keys work, some latch automatically and a key must be used to open and close.
The drop front rests on pull out supports, inside are tiny drawers and cubicles plus a few ink stains for character. The interior door lock is missing, replaced with a pull.
The removable upper bookcase has shelves that adjust on wooden supports on this historic antique furniture from a country manor house in Europe. One foot shows restoration and there are shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
Measurements are 47" wide, 23" deep, 81" tall and the writing surface is 31" high.
