Carved about 1880 in the Black Forest region where Germany, Switzerland and France meet, this sideboard cabinet with a china cabinet or bookcase top has winged griffins, birds, gargoyle heads and spiral columns.
Masterfully hand carved of solid oak in three dimensions, this furniture is richly detailed with bold moldings. Every piece shows hand hewn and planing marks.
The top surface has been revarnished for stain resistance, the rest of the finish is original. Waxed and polished, all that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
The detachable upper section has wavy glass doors and shelves that adjust on wooden supports. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and carved gargoyle heads for pulls. Upper and lower doors have working keys and locks on this historic European antique.
Measurements are 55 1/2" wide, 23" deep, 90 1/2" tall and the base is 39" high.
