Authentic New England country furniture from about 1780, this wonderful tall chest of drawers or highboy was hand crafted of solid cherry. Expert Yankee workmanship is shown throughout.
The old finish has marvelous color and patina, there are many mars and wear from centuries of use. There are shrinkage separations from age in the wide side planks, plus repairs to the original feet and glue blocks, see photos.
Graduated drawers have chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetails. Square and rose cut nail heads are visible, hand plane marks are everywhere. The fourth drawer from the bottom was rebuilt by a master about 60 years ago for unknown reasons, it is a superb match, see photos.
Old brasses show hand work as well. The back is rough sawn. Fluted columns and arched drawer fronts are especially charming.
Dimensions are 38" wide, 22" deep and 67" tall.
