This American antique washstand or commode is also referred to as a "Bonnet Box."
The lift lid opens to stash a wash bowl and pitcher in the days before plumbing. Hand made of glowing golden brown chestnut about 1940, this country commode shows Empire design influence.
The finish is excellent with warm patina - the interior has water damage. Said to be from Pennsylvania, the hand-planed wood is joined with square nails. Size is 30" wide, 17" deep and 30" tall.
