This country pine trunk or blanket chest is entirely hand made, with original wrought iron hardware, and a spectacular lock and key. The folk style hand painting is similar to rose maling, and is dated "1817. " The backside is finished, so this could be a distinctive coffee table as well. Entirely hand planed, the corners are hand dovetailed. There is very charming wear, mars, cracks and dents - lots of "character" to this antique furniture.
There is fading to the painting, which certainly looks old, but we have no way of being certain that this beautiful painting was done in 1817, when the trunk certainly appears to have been made. The trunk rests on bun feet, the interior is clean bare pine. An enormous key is needed to open the elaborate lock - see photo, and this is very picturesque folk artistry. Measurements are 49" long, 25" wide and 20" tall.
