This spectacular armoire or linen press has hand carved cherubs and lion heads, and there are sculptures of cornucopia or horns of plenty on the door panels. Entirely crafted of solid fine-grained oak and shaped with hand tools, there are wooden pegs at the joints. The lock, key and latches are original wrought iron.
Polished to a rich deep brown, the original finish is remarkably fine, with only a few mars at the edges. Inside are adjustable shelves and 2 drawers at the bottom. The artistry in the high relief carving is wondrous, including three-dimensional fruits and flowers.
Distinctive country workmanship from the south of France this dates from about 1880. Measurements are 5'4" wide, 2'5" deep and 7'1" tall.
